MARISOL CAVIA
Under The Skin
Shoreditch Gallery, Hoxton Market, Shoreditch, London
April 2004.
Research shows that in England one woman out of every nine will get breast cancer. In this installation I have used two sets of nine ceramic bras. In each set eight of the bras have luscious, ripe fruit like colours to represent the healthy breast, and I have used black for the ninth to depict the cancer victim. In the middle of the two sets is what I have called the International Altar. This altar holds objects that inform about the breast cancer and the stories of different sufferers. There are also 'offerings' and the audience is invited to share their experiences by tying their own offerings to the altar.
